Gear Oil in Water Supply - Ft. Lauderdale, Florida

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., Sept. 24

In the community of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Many folks listened in, to find out if  their tap water was safe to drink.  Where an accidental spill occurred at the city's treatment plant.
An employee at the “Fiveash” Water Treatment Plant accidentally dropped a small amount of gear oil into the water supply Tuesday calling for the city of Fort Lauderdale to issue a health advisory.

The city's quarter of a million residents were advised switch to bottled water for drinking and cooking.
Thomas Mueller of the state Department of Health stated, “the city made an error by using non-food-grade oil to lubricate machinery”. Typically, the common practice is to use a consumable oil, like cooking oil.

Mueller also, stated, "anyone who drank the water before learning about the warning would probably experience nothing worse than an odd taste or odor".

Schools in the area were forced to cover drinking fountains and turn off bathroom sinks until the city issued an all-clear.

The alert was recalled after enough water cleared through the system.
